Anthropic files for biggest IPO in history despite staggering $80.7 billion losses and warnings AI could wipe out humanity

Anthropic, the San Francisco company behind the Claude chatbot, has publicly released its IPO filing, setting up what could be the largest stock market debut in history, with a Wall Street listing planned for November. According to the Daily Mail’s report, the company intends to list on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol “ANT.”

The 335-page filing shows revenue growing rapidly, but like many tech companies going public, Anthropic has yet to turn a profit. It reported a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, compared with a loss of $13 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Private investors valued Anthropic at $965 billion earlier this year. Reports suggest that figure could climb to $1.5 trillion — or possibly $2 trillion — in its market debut, though no formal number has been finalized. At $1.5 trillion, Anthropic would rank among the world’s most valuable public companies, alongside Tesla. The offering could raise as much as $100 billion, which would surpass the record set by SpaceX’s IPO in June, which raised $86 billion.

Because the company is only about five years old, the flotation could also substantially boost the wealth of CEO Dario Amodei and his sister and co-founder, Daniela Amodei. The exact valuation and the amount ultimately raised will only be known after the IPO.

Going public would put Anthropic ahead of rival OpenAI, making it the first of the two competing AI labs to reach the public markets. The filing comes weeks after CEO Dario Amodei argued in an essay for slowing the development of the most advanced AI models.

The article also highlights warnings from inside the industry. In September, Jacob Coxon, described as a researcher who worked for OpenAI and Anthropic, announced he had quit and warned that neither company was “acting responsibly,” saying rapid AI progress could threaten humanity as soon as 2030. The Daily Mail frames the IPO against those broader warnings that advanced AI could pose an existential risk.
