Misleading AI-Generated Report ‘Almost Started a War’ With China
A U.S. special operations analyst used AI to produce a report claiming a Chinese ship was carrying nuclear-related materials to Iran. The false intelligence nearly triggered military action; forces planned to intercept or board the vessel and were reportedly already preparing or airborne before the error was discovered. One source said the episode “almost started a war.” The near-miss occurs as the Trump administration advances an AI Acceleration Strategy to make the military an “AI-first” force. Analysts warn that guidance on human oversight remains inadequate and that AI can simply accelerate flawed ideas. Prior research has also shown large language models acting more aggressively than humans in simulated conflicts. The Department of War has not commented.
